As India’s infrastructure growth continues, the Noida International Airport in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, is taking shape and set to become one of the country’s largest airports upon completion in 2024. The airport, spread across an expansive 5,000 acres, is strategically located approximately 72 km from the existing IGI airport in New Delhi and 40 km from Noida, aiming to enhance domestic and international connectivity for Delhi-NCR, Noida, and Western Uttar Pradesh.
Developed in four distinct phases, the airport is expected to accommodate the increasing demand for both domestic and international passengers and cargo. Zurich Airport International AG (ZAIA), a leading global airport operator with over 75 years of experience, is responsible for the construction and operation of the airport through its subsidiary, Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL).
YIAPL CEO, Christoph Schnellmann, shared exciting updates on the progress of the airport’s construction. More than 25 buildings, including the passenger terminal, air traffic control tower, office blocks, sewage and water treatment plants, and electric substations, are set to be constructed in the next few months. The passenger terminal is already reaching the first floor, and the ATC tower is progressing on the fourth floor. The runway work is underway across the entire length of the airport. The airport is scheduled to become operational by the end of 2024, with one terminal building and runway, capable of handling 12 million passengers annually.
The Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL), comprising stakeholders such as the UP government, Noida Industrial Development Authority, Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority, and Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), oversees the joint venture project.
Arun Vir Singh, CEO of NIAL and YEIDA, expressed confidence that the airport will reach a total passenger capacity of 225 million upon completion, making it the largest in Asia and the fourth-largest globally. Phase 1 of the airport will begin with two runways, with three more runways planned for subsequent phases. An MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) facility is also in the works to cater to the increasing number of domestic flights.
The airport’s development is driving substantial infrastructure advancements in its vicinity. Several industrial clusters, including a toy park, medical devices manufacturing park, data center park, EV manufacturing hubs, apparel park, and handicraft park, are being planned alongside the Yamuna Expressway. This infrastructure development is set to transform the surrounding areas and foster economic growth.
The Noida International Airport will play a crucial role in India’s aviation growth, serving as a dual transit facility for various districts in Uttar Pradesh and acting as a second airport for Delhi-NCR and nearby regions. With the strategic location and efficient facilities, the airport is poised to handle the increasing air traffic in the region and boost cargo operations for industries in the area.
Furthermore, the airport’s advantageous location adjacent to the Yamuna Expressway and its close proximity to an elevated direct interchange will ensure seamless connectivity and easy access for passengers and cargo transportation. Additionally, the proposed high-speed rail connecting Delhi to Varanasi, with a stop at the airport, will further enhance connectivity within the state and beyond.
The Noida International Airport is not only a marvel of modern infrastructure but also a testament to India’s commitment to sustainable and efficient aviation growth. As it continues to take shape, the airport is set to become a significant hub in the region, fostering economic development and propelling India’s transit sector into the future.
