The Delhi Metro is on track to surpass New York City’s subway as the world’s longest metro system in a single city by December 2025, according to officials, as reported by Times Property.
The rapid transit network, which currently spans 395 kilometers (245 miles), will achieve this milestone with the addition of a 12-kilometer (7.5-mile) extension, bringing its total length to 407 kilometers (253 miles).
Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal confirmed the expansion, underscoring Delhi’s evolving urban transit landscape. “This is a remarkable achievement that reflects our commitment to enhancing public transportation,” he said.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is accelerating work on Phase IV of its expansion, which places significant emphasis on underground corridors to improve connectivity across the city. A major milestone in the project was reached with the successful completion of tunneling between the Kishangarh and Vasant Kunj stations on the Golden Line, a critical segment of the 19.3-kilometer (12-mile) Tughlakabad-Aerocity corridor.
DMRC officials stated that a tunnel boring machine (TBM) has completed a 1,550-meter (5,085-foot) tunnel at Vasant Kunj station. The second tunnel on this stretch is slated for completion by June 2025. The Tughlakabad-Aerocity corridor alone will feature 19.343 kilometers (12 miles) of underground tracks as part of the broader 40.109-kilometer (25-mile) expansion under Phase IV. Once finished, the Golden Line will include both underground and elevated sections, bolstering transit options in South Delhi and connecting key transport hubs.
The metro expansion aims to ease congestion and shorten travel times across the National Capital Region (NCR). Passengers can expect modernized infrastructure, including escalators, elevators, and tactile paving to assist visually impaired commuters.
As of March 2025, the Delhi Metro operates 12 lines, covering 289 stations across a 395-km network. The system extends beyond Delhi to cities including Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Bahadurgarh, and Ballabhgarh, serving millions across the NCR.
With its upcoming extension, Delhi will secure its place as the world’s most extensive metro network within a single city, setting a new benchmark in urban mobility.
