In a significant development, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has submitted the detailed project report (DPR) for the Greater Noida Knowledge Park 2 – New Delhi metro section to the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA). This ambitious project aims to cover a 72-kilometer stretch and will be completed in two phases.
According to officials familiar with the project, the DPR proposes the inclusion of approximately seven stations between Knowledge Park 2 and the New Delhi metro station. The report has been submitted to the Uttar Pradesh government for review and final approval. YEIDA, which has been entrusted with the responsibility of connecting the upcoming Noida International Airport in Jewar with the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, plans to facilitate seamless and efficient transportation between the two airports through a high-speed metro system.
It is worth noting that the DPR for the Jewar Airport and Knowledge Park 2 section has already been submitted to the state government for approval.
Arun Vir Singh, the CEO of YEIDA, stated, “The DPR for the Knowledge Park 2 to New Delhi section was submitted around 5-6 days ago. We have also forwarded this DPR to the state government for approval. The report suggests the inclusion of seven metro stations between Knowledge Park 2 and New Delhi. We are now awaiting the government’s approval and further guidance on the project.”
While the final decision regarding the number and locations of the metro stations, as well as the funding pattern, rests with the government, officials did not disclose specific details about the proposed station locations.
A spokesperson from the DMRC confirmed that the DPR has indeed been submitted to YEIDA.
YEIDA officials mentioned that some of the proposed stations might include the Botanical Garden and Akshardham.
The 72-kilometer metro corridor is expected to be developed in two parts: the first part spanning 35.64 kilometers from Jewar to Knowledge Park 2 in Greater Noida, and the second part covering 36.36 kilometers from Knowledge Park 2 to New Delhi, where commuters can connect to the existing Airport Express Line.
The first phase of the Jewar airport is projected to commence operations by the end of September 2024. YEIDA estimates suggest that nearly 5 million passengers are expected to use the Noida International Airport on its first day.
