India has retained its third-place ranking in the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) annual list of the top 10 countries and regions for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification in 2024, as published by Business Standard, according to a report.

The ranking, released Thursday, highlights the progress made by countries outside the United States in adopting sustainable, resilient, and environmentally friendly building practices. LEED certifications in India are overseen by the Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), which works to accelerate the adoption of green buildings nationwide.

China topped the 2024 list with more than 25 million gross square meters (GSM) of LEED-certified space, followed by Canada with 10 million GSM. India secured third place with 370 LEED-certified projects covering 8.5 million GSM (91.5 million square feet) of building space.

“India’s remarkable achievement of 370 LEED-certified projects in 2024 underscores the country’s strong commitment to sustainable development and climate action,” said Gopalakrishnan Padmanabhan, managing director for Southeast Asia and the Middle East at GBCI. “With 8.5 million GSM of green-certified space, India is addressing the growing need for sustainable urban infrastructure while making significant progress toward the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals for 2030.”

Although the United States is not included in the ranking, it remains the largest market for LEED certifications, with more than 56 million GSM certified in 2024.
