The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (Yeida) announced Thursday its decision to allocate 100 acres in Sector 11, near Noida International Airport, for the establishment of an Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) medical college and hospital, as published by Hindustan Times.
The site was selected due to its location in the National Capital Region (NCR), which has a substantial insured person (IP) population exceeding 5.65 million. This represents 15% to 16% of ESIC’s total beneficiaries. Among them, Gautam Budh Nagar accounts for 1.586 million, followed by Delhi with 1.492 million, Gurugram with 1.479 million, and Faridabad with 1.093 million.
“The 100 acres will be allotted at no cost for the development of the medical college and hospital,” said Yeida CEO Arun Vir Singh. “Consent from local villagers for land acquisition has already been secured, and the proposal will be presented to the Yeida board on March 28 for formal approval.”
ESIC’s governing body, in its 194th meeting on Oct. 8, 2024, granted in-principle approval to establish medical colleges at 10 locations, including Noida. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day pledge to add 75,000 new medical seats over the next five years.
As part of a nationwide expansion, ESIC aims to bolster medical education by setting up 10 new institutions. Currently, ESIC operates 165 hospitals, 1,574 dispensaries, and several tie-up hospitals, providing healthcare services to 144.3 million beneficiaries. By March 2025, the number of insured persons under ESIC is projected to surpass 40 million, extending coverage to more than 160 million under the Social Security Code of 2020.
With multiple medical institutions already in place, ESIC is positioned to become a prominent player in medical education, second only to the Indian government.
